- Well, I have just had a long conversation with Neil Shapiro, on the phone, no
- less... It was quite enlightening.
-
- Basically, the sorry SOB who started this thing was really asking for it. He
- would log on to CIS once a week, download stuff, then post a message saying
- that everyone should call up his board and get all the files that CIS was
- offering for a $25/year fee.
-
- This is against the US Copyright Code under the "complilation" clause. Shapiro
- explained it to me with an analogy to a short story collection. You can't take
- someone's short story from a collection of stories published in a book and
- republish it without the original author's permission. It's the same analogy
- as the phone book, we saw here earlier.
-
- Anyways, I tried to ask as many penetrating questions and I could think of.
- Like, "Do you feel theatened by BBS's?" "Do you feel that BBS's in any way
- are competing with your service?" "Does this mean that CIS is trying to claim
- ownership over all the files that are uploaded to it?"
-
- I have to admit, that most of the answers to those questions would have
- pleased most of us. And I suppose that he really meant it, too. The response
- to the question that concerns us most, "Does this mean that CIS is trying to
- claim ownership," was the most relieving. Basically, the answer is NO. They
- claim make no claim to the files as property. Each of those files are handled
- on an individual basis. As it turns out, a lot of the files uploaded to CIS
- contain a copyright notice stipulating that they may not be distributed by any
- other channel. Those you cannot legally distribute. Others, including (yuck)
- Red Ryder, are encouraged to be distributed freely. Still others have no
- copyright notice and are really public domain property.
-
- Besides the phone call I had a rather extensive message thread going on CIS.
- I suppose it's not over yet, but I'll upload it here and Leo will be posting
- it on the network.
-
- So, the net result of this is 1) I'm leaving MacUser alone since they have
- nothing to do with this, and 2) I'm not going to cancel my CIS account just to
- piss them off. After all, I still need to use OAG to find the best flights...
-
- The lesson here is that if you really want to be legal about posting files on
- your system is that you should get permission from each author who has a
- restrictive copyright notice.
